Google DeepMind Shake-Up: Hassabis to Chair, Jeff Dean Exits

Hassabis moves to DeepMind Chair, Kavukcuoglu takes charge, and Jeff Dean exits with three peers to found Discovery Loop. What Aug 5 changes for Google and India.

Google announced its biggest AI leadership change since the DeepMind merger on August 5: Demis Hassabis steps down as Google DeepMind CEO to become Chair of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu takes day-to-day charge as SVP reporting to Sundar Pichai, and Jeff Dean — Google’s chief scientist and employee number ~30 — leaves after 27 years with three other senior researchers to found a startup called Discovery Loop. Here is what actually changed, the 2026 exit pattern behind it, and what it means for Google’s very large bets on India.

What Google actually announced

The announcement came as a joint post from Pichai and Hassabis titled “The next chapter of our AI momentum.” Hassabis hands over operational control of the unit he has run since DeepMind and Google Brain merged in April 2023, moves to a strategic Chair role, and adds a newly created Alphabet-wide Chief Scientist title. “I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand,” he wrote, adding that DeepMind has “become the AI engine room of Google.”

Notably, nobody inherits the CEO title. Pichai’s wording is precise: “Koray, the current Chief Technology Officer of GDM and our Chief AI Architect, will step up as SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting to me.” Kavukcuoglu — a 13-year DeepMind veteran behind WaveNet and DQN, named Google’s first Chief AI Architect in June 2025 — now runs Gemini model development, frontier research, the Gemini app and developer platforms. Hassabis’s reassurance: “The Gemini models are in good hands with Koray and the leads.” No effective date appears anywhere in the post.

Hassabis is not leaving Alphabet. He continues as CEO of Isomorphic Labs, the drug-discovery spin-off that raised $2.1 billion in May 2026, and he keeps advising on AGI strategy. The scale of what Kavukcuoglu inherits is in the same post: Pichai says the Gemini app has passed 950 million monthly users and Gemma models 900 million downloads.

Discovery Loop: four architects walk out one door

The same post confirms Jeff Dean’s departure — and undersells it. Google named only Dean, but reporters quickly established that three more of Google’s most cited researchers are leaving with him to co-found Discovery Loop, a Palo Alto public benefit corporation whose stated mission is to automate machine learning, science and engineering to accelerate discovery.

Founder Tenure and role Best known for
Jeff Dean 27 years — joined 1999, roughly employee #30, per GeekWire MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner, TensorFlow, TPUs; Chief Scientist since 2023
Sanjay Ghemawat Senior Fellow, per TechCrunch Dean’s legendary coding partner on GFS, MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner
Oriol Vinyals ~13 years — VP of Research, DeepMind seq2seq, AlphaStar; a Gemini technical co-lead
Quoc Le ~15 years — Google Fellow Google Brain co-founder, AutoML, chain-of-thought prompting

The financing is as notable as the roster. Google itself is a founding investor and will be Discovery Loop’s cloud partner — for at least the first year, per GeekWire — with a seed round co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, joined by Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed and Doerr Capital. No amount was disclosed. Dean’s pitch, as he told GeekWire: “Imagine a future where a handful of people can conduct scientific research and engineering tasks much more rapidly, and with higher quality, than massive teams of scientists and engineers do today.”

The 2026 exodus, in one table

August 5 is the fourth major DeepMind talent story this year, and the pattern is the story.

When (2026) Who left Where they went
Early 2026 David Silver, AlphaGo/AlphaZero architect Founded Ineffable Intelligence; reported $1B+ seed led by Sequoia
June 18 Noam Shazeer, Gemini co-lead To OpenAI — two years after Google’s reported $2.7B Character.AI deal brought him back
June 20 John Jumper, AlphaFold lead and Nobel laureate To Anthropic
Late July AlphaFold’s dedicated team FT-sourced reports say it was broken up across Gemini work, Isomorphic and exits; Google has not confirmed
Aug 5 Dean, Ghemawat, Vinyals, Le Discovery Loop — with Google as founding investor

Two clarifications the aggregated coverage keeps blurring. First, the “Google dismantled the Nobel-winning AlphaFold team” claim circulating online traces to late-July reports, not to this week’s announcement, which never mentions AlphaFold; Google’s only on-record response has been that “many of the researchers behind AlphaFold continue to drive scientific and technological advances across Google, Google DeepMind, and Isomorphic Labs” — a statement about people, not about the team’s structure. Second, Hassabis and Jumper shared half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold; only Jumper has left. As recently as June, Hassabis was publicly dismissive of exit talk, telling Semafor that Google has “by far the biggest and broadest research bench of any of the labs”.

What it means

The cleanest way to read Hassabis’s move is against the only two precedents that fit. In January 2000, Bill Gates handed Microsoft’s CEO job to Steve Ballmer and made himself Chief Software Architect. In December 2019, Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped back from Alphabet in favour of Sundar Pichai, staying on as board members. Founder keeps the technology title and the long-term questions; an operator takes delivery. The twist here is that Kavukcuoglu does not get the CEO title at all — he is an SVP reporting to Pichai. DeepMind, acquired in 2014 and already folded into Google proper in 2023, now looks less like a research house with a chief executive and more like a Google product division. That is the org-chart admission that Gemini is Google’s core product now.

The market read it as loss, then thought again. Alphabet fell as much as 5.4% intraday on the news, but closed down 3.53% on a day when the same recap attributed the slide mainly to antitrust-remedy reports and AI capex worries — so treat “the stock fell 5% because of Jeff Dean” as directionally true at best. The sharper signal is competitive: Reuters tied the reshuffle’s timing to a Gemini 4 that reportedly missed a June target, and the Hacker News discussion kept returning to one theme: DeepMind’s equity upside cannot match what OpenAI or Anthropic paper gains — or a Google-funded startup of your own — can offer. When the cheap end of the market is being squeezed by DeepSeek’s $0.28-per-million-token V4 Flash and Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Max, and the premium end by OpenAI’s 80% price cut on GPT-5.6 Luna, losing four architects in a day is a cost Google chose to absorb gracefully — even invest in — rather than fight.

The India angle

No outlet covering the shake-up asked the India question, which is strange, because India is where Google’s AI money is currently going. Its biggest announced investment in India is the $15 billion AI hub in Visakhapatnam — a gigawatt-scale data-centre campus with a new subsea cable gateway, built with AdaniConneX and Airtel, targeted for construction from early 2026. On the demand side, the Reliance Jio deal gives 500 million Jio users 18 months of Google AI Pro free — a bundle Google values at about ₹35,100 — running until October 29, 2026. Both bets were championed while Hassabis ran DeepMind and Pichai personally fronted the India pitch.

The research side is the part to watch. DeepMind lists Bangalore among its ten offices worldwide, and its India team works on efficient models, continual learning and multilingual AI — the mandate Hassabis himself described in February when he told the India AI Impact Summit that India will be “a powerhouse for AI across the globe.” Days before the reshuffle, DeepMind’s India leadership was showcasing AIIMS researchers using MedGemma, IISc’s Project Vaani speech dataset, and 150,000-plus Indian researchers on the AlphaFold database. Whether Kavukcuoglu — who has no public India statement on record — protects that multilingual research mandate, or narrows Bengaluru toward Gemini product work, is now a genuinely open question for Indian AI research.

There is also a quiet Indian thread inside the departure itself: Sanjay Ghemawat, the systems legend leaving with Dean, grew up in Kota, Rajasthan. But none of the five principals in this reshuffle is India-based — India’s DeepMind leadership remains regional. For a market Google keeps calling central, the decisions that shape it are still made a dozen time zones away.

What to watch

Watch for an effective date and any follow-on exits — the coverage that confirmed the four departures is barely a day old, and transitions like this often trigger a second wave. Watch whether Discovery Loop discloses its round size, and whether Gemini 4 ships this year under Kavukcuoglu. For India: whether the Jio free tier is renewed past October 29, whether Vizag construction starts on schedule, and whether DeepMind Bengaluru’s multilingual mandate survives the new org chart. Across our Big Tech coverage, this is the one to track: the company that assembled the deepest AI research bench in the world is now betting it can keep the engine running while its architects build elsewhere — partly on Google’s own money.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Jeff Dean leaving Google?

He is leaving voluntarily after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a Palo Alto public benefit corporation that wants to automate machine-learning research and, eventually, scientific and engineering discovery. He was not fired — Google is a founding investor in the new company and will supply it cloud compute.

Who is the new CEO of Google DeepMind?

Nobody holds that title now. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's long-time CTO and Google's Chief AI Architect, takes over day-to-day operations as Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. Demis Hassabis becomes Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.

Is Demis Hassabis leaving Google?

No. He gives up the CEO role and day-to-day operations but stays as Chair of Google DeepMind and takes a new Alphabet-wide Chief Scientist role. He also continues as CEO of Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI drug-discovery company, which closed a major funding round in May 2026.

What happened to the AlphaFold team?

That is a separate, earlier story. In late July 2026, Financial Times-sourced reports said the dedicated AlphaFold team had been broken up, with members moved to Gemini work, Isomorphic Labs, or out of Google. Google has not confirmed a disbanding; AlphaFold lead John Jumper had already left for Anthropic in June. The August 5 announcement does not mention AlphaFold at all.
