Claude for Small Business: What It Is and What It Costs

Claude for Small Business is a toggle inside Claude Cowork, not a new plan. What is included, what it really costs in the US and India, and how it compares.

Claude for Small Business is not a new subscription plan. It is a package of 15 ready-to-run workflows and 15 skills that toggles on inside Claude Cowork, connecting Claude to tools like QuickBooks, PayPal and HubSpot — and Anthropic has never published a separate price for it. It launched on May 13, 2026, resurfaced on Hacker News today, and by every indication so far its practical cost is whichever paid Claude plan you already have. Here is what is actually in it, what it costs in the US and India, and how it stacks up against ChatGPT Business, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s bundled Gemini.

What Claude for Small Business actually is

Anthropic describes the offering as “a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that put Claude inside the tools small businesses depend on”. The delivery mechanism matters: this is a toggle you switch on inside Claude Cowork, Anthropic’s agentic workspace, not a standalone app or a new tier. Toggle it on, and Claude gains a menu of pre-built business jobs.

Those jobs span finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer service. Anthropic’s page names roughly eleven of them: planning payroll, closing the month, getting a pulse on your business, running campaigns, an invoice chaser, a margin analyzer, a month-end prepper, a tax-season organizer, a contract reviewer, a lead triager and a content strategist. The full list of 15 workflows and 15 skills is not enumerated anywhere in the announcement — a small transparency gap that none of the launch coverage closed.

The launch integrations are Intuit QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Two guardrails are worth noting. Claude inherits the permissions an employee already has — if you cannot see something in QuickBooks today, Claude will not surface it for you. And workflows do not run on their own: the user must initiate and approve each one before it executes, per Anthropic’s announcement and Axios.

Around the product, Anthropic wrapped a distinctly offline campaign: a 10-city US “Claude SMB Tour” that kicked off May 14 in Chicago, offering free half-day workshops for 100 small-business leaders per city, plus a free “AI Fluency for Small Business” online course. Anthropic’s head of SMB, Lina Ochman, told Axios that “historically, the software industry has been built for enterprises or VC-backed startups and consumers” — excluding, in her words, “the 15-person HVAC company or the 30-person landscaper or the 50-person real estate brokerage.”

Why is a May launch news again in late July? The announcement resurfaced on Hacker News this morning, more than ten weeks after launch, with the discussion turning to what agentic bookkeeping looks like in practice. One commenter described already running a homegrown version: “I have Claude Code hooked up to my mail synced via IMAP, my Mercury read-only token, and beancount, and it gets almost all of my invoices and categorizes them” — while arguing that the hard part for Anthropic is not capability but market penetration.

What it costs: your plan is the price

Here is the detail every launch-day story skipped: neither Anthropic’s announcement nor any major outlet states a price or a minimum plan tier for Claude for Small Business. That is a confirmed absence, not an oversight in our reading — Thurrott.com flagged the same ambiguity, describing the offering as “not an extra-cost add-on” while noting Anthropic leaves the base-subscription requirement unclear.

What can be pinned down is where Claude Cowork — the surface the toggle lives in — becomes available: Anthropic’s pricing page lists Cowork from the Pro tier, which costs $17 per month billed annually or $20 billed monthly. Claude Team runs $20 per standard seat per month billed annually ($25 monthly) for teams of 2 to 150, with premium seats at $100, and self-serve Enterprise starts at $20 per seat plus usage-based charges. So the best-supported reading, combining the pricing page with Thurrott’s characterisation, is that Claude for Small Business is a free feature pack for anyone already paying for a Cowork-capable plan. Treat the exact minimum tier as unconfirmed until Anthropic says it outright.

One caveat belongs in any honest cost estimate: the workflows lean on paid third-party tools. QuickBooks, HubSpot and DocuSign subscriptions are your own — Anthropic offers no bundled discount on any of them. And on data handling, Anthropic’s announcement states it does not train on your data by default on Team and Enterprise plans — wording that conspicuously does not name Pro, the tier most solo operators would use. We unpacked how the major chatbots handle this in our guide to AI chatbot data privacy.

How it compares with ChatGPT Business, Copilot and Gemini

Anthropic is the late entrant here — TechCrunch notes OpenAI launched comparable business offerings at the end of 2023, and the initiative targets a pool of 36 million US small businesses. The current per-seat maths across vendors, from official pricing pages as of July 27, 2026:

Vendor SMB offering Per seat, annual billing Per seat, monthly billing Seat rules AI workflows included
Anthropic Claude Team (SMB pack included via Cowork) $20 (premium $100) $25 (premium $125) 2–150 15 workflows + 15 skills, approval-gated
OpenAI ChatGPT Business $20 $25 Min 2 seats 60+ app connectors, agentic Codex
Microsoft M365 Copilot Business add-on $18 (promo; list $21) $25.20 Needs M365 licence; ≤300 users Prebuilt agents (Researcher, Analyst)
Google Workspace Business Standard $14 $16.80 ≤300 users per org Gemini bundled across Gmail/Docs/Meet
Perplexity Enterprise Pro ~$33.33 $40 No stated minimum Extended usage, no API access

The structural differences matter more than the near-identical sticker prices. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business is a proper plan with a two-seat minimum and a no-training-by-default policy. Microsoft’s Copilot for business is an add-on: its $18 promotional annual price (list $21, or $25.20 month-to-month) sits on top of a Microsoft 365 licence you must already have. Google has stopped selling a business AI seat at all, folding Gemini into Workspace plans so the AI arrives bundled with email and docs. Anthropic’s move is different again: rather than a new SKU, it packaged vertical workflows into plans it already sells — closer to a distribution play than a pricing one. The India angle

Every concrete availability detail in the launch — the tour cities, the workshop seats, the solopreneur cohort — is US-based, and Anthropic has made no statement about non-US availability for Claude for Small Business. That silence is conspicuous, because India is Anthropic’s most obvious next market: the company’s own data puts India at 5.8% of global Claude usage, its second-largest market after the US.

The pricing groundwork is already being laid. In mid-July, Anthropic quietly began showing rupee pricing to some Indian users — Business Today reports Claude Pro at ₹2,000 a month, Max at ₹11,999 and Team seats from ₹2,399, GST included, where Indian users previously paid US-dollar prices plus 18% GST and forex fees on top. TechCrunch reports the localized pricing has begun appearing for some users rather than everyone, and notes there is still no UPI payment support — a real friction point for exactly the small businesses this product targets. As of July 27, rupee prices do not appear on Anthropic’s global pricing page either.

The demand side looks ready. Salesforce’s SMB Trends survey found 78% of Indian small and mid-sized businesses already use or are experimenting with AI — in a 200-respondent India sample — with most reporting income gains. The scale of the opportunity is enormous: government figures count over 7.83 crore MSMEs registered on the Udyam platforms as of February 2026. And Anthropic is building local muscle: its Bengaluru office opened in early 2026 with partnerships spanning Air India, CRED, Razorpay and Cognizant, and the company says India run-rate revenue doubled between October 2025 and February 2026. A Hindi-and-Indic-tuned workflow pack priced in rupees would be the logical sequel; it has not been announced.

What it means

The SMB push is best read against Anthropic’s revenue curve. The company disclosed a run rate above $30 billion in early April, with more than 1,000 enterprise clients each paying over $1 million a year — and by late May its Series H disclosures put the run rate past $47 billion, up from roughly $9 billion at the end of 2025. That growth is driven largely by enterprise demand, per PYMNTS. Small business is the customer Anthropic does not yet own, and as president Daniela Amodei put it to Yahoo Finance: “Small businesses make up nearly half the American economy, but they’ve never had the resources of bigger companies. AI is the first technology that can finally close that gap.”

Anthropic cites the same economics — small businesses produce 44% of US GDP and employ nearly half the private-sector workforce — and its survey finding that half of small-business owners name data security as their biggest AI hesitation explains the announcement’s emphasis on inherited permissions and approval gates. The strategic logic echoes its infrastructure spending spree, from the AMD MI450 compute deal on down: lock in demand across every customer segment before the market consolidates.

The harder question is distribution, and it is the one the Hacker News thread kept circling. Microsoft reaches small businesses through licences they already hold; Google arrives bundled with their email. Anthropic has to earn the install — which is precisely what a 10-city roadshow of half-day workshops is for. Whether a workflow pack plus a bus tour can outrun default-on bundling is the experiment now running.

What to watch

Three open threads will tell you whether this is working. First, pricing clarity: Anthropic still has not named the minimum plan tier, and a single line on the pricing page would end the ambiguity that even sympathetic coverage keeps flagging. Second, geography: the product’s framing is US-first, while Anthropic’s usage data says its second market is India — watch for the rupee rollout to complete and for any SMB-pack localisation to follow. Third, traction: more than ten weeks after launch there is no published adoption data, tour attendance figure or customer count for the SMB pack, so the first hard number Anthropic releases will be the first real evidence beyond testimonials.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude for Small Business free?

It is not a separately priced product. Anthropic ships it as a toggle inside Claude Cowork, and no Anthropic page names a price or a required plan tier for it. Press coverage characterises it as included at no extra charge on existing paid Claude plans, so your real cost is the plan you already pay for.

What is the difference between Claude Team and Claude for Small Business?

Claude Team is a paid plan, priced per seat, with central billing and admin controls. Claude for Small Business is not a plan at all — it is a pack of 15 ready-to-run workflows and 15 skills that switches on inside Claude Cowork and connects to tools like QuickBooks and HubSpot.

Is Claude for Small Business available in India?

Anthropic has made no India-specific availability statement — every concrete launch detail, like the 10-city SMB tour, is US-based. Claude itself works in India, and rupee pricing for Pro, Max and Team plans began appearing for some Indian users in mid-July 2026.

What apps does Claude for Small Business connect to?

Anthropic names Intuit QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 as launch integrations. Claude works within the permissions an employee already has in those tools and asks for approval before it runs a workflow.
